An elevator pitch is a short, concise statement that summarizes who you are, what you do, and why someone should be interested in what you have to offer. It’s called an elevator pitch because it’s supposed to be short enough to deliver during a brief elevator ride.

Every professional is asked the question, “what do you do?”

Every professional should be able to answer that question.

Every professional should have an elevator pitch because it’s a powerful tool for networking and making a strong first impression. In today’s fast-paced business world, people are constantly bombarded with information and are often pressed for time. An elevator pitch allows you to quickly and effectively communicate your value to potential employers, clients, or business partners.

An effective elevator pitch should be memorable and easy to understand. It should be no more than 30 seconds long and should highlight your unique selling points. It should also be tailored to your audience and should be practiced beforehand to ensure that it sounds natural and not rehearsed.

Having an elevator pitch also helps you to be more confident and prepared in professional settings. When you have a clear idea of what you want to say and how you want to say it, it’s easier to make a strong impression and stand out from the crowd.

Now that we know the importance of an elevator pitch. How should a college student draft their pitch? A very simple template to answer five questions:

  1. What is your name?
  2. When will you graduate?
  3. What degree are you seeking?
  4. What career path will your degree take you?
  5. What was the choice important to you?

If the college student can answer these five questions in a well-thought-out pitch, then they will be head and shoulders above the competition.

In summary, an elevator pitch is a valuable tool for every professional, including college students.  It allows them to quickly and effectively communicate their value to potential employers, clients, or business partners. It also helps them to be more confident and prepared in professional settings. And it’s important to practice it beforehand to make sure it sounds natural.
